Lucerne:
One of the days spent in Switzerland was on a day tour. The first stop on the tour was Lucerne, about an hour’s bus ride from Zurich. To me, Zurich and Lucerne had very similar vibes while walking around to explore the city and being an overall chill place. However, Lucerne had more car and road traffic than Zurich. If you look at the streets in Zurich where we stayed, there was no real room for cars or buses on the narrow streets. If you wandered around Zurich, you definitely saw cars, but there was a lot more in Lucerne. This may have just been because of where we spent our time in Lucerne and had we wandered around more, we may have found areas where there was minimal road traffic. Even though there was more traffic presence in Lucerne, you were still very much able to wander around and just see what was there. Lucerne had a bridge to a platform in the water that I would have really liked to have walked to, but we unfortunately ran out of time. This and further exploring of Lucerne would be something I would like to do in future travels.
Titlis:
Mount Titlis was the second out of two stops on our day tour. The way you get up to the top of Mount Titlis is by tram. After you get to the top of one tram you get on another one to reach the peak of Mount Titlis. As we were going up the first tram, we could actually see some people hiking up the mountain which was impressive and looked exhausting. Also, on this first tram, there was a lake that you could walk or ride a bike around as well. Once you went up both trams and arrived at the top, there was quite a bit to do. The first thing we did once we arrived at the top, was walk through the glacier cave. This was essentially just a cave of ice so be warned, it was very slippery. It was super cool to walk through. There were even some stuffed animals like Scrat from the movie, Ice Age, and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh frozen in blocks of ice. Near the end of the glacier cave there was a throne made of ice you could sit on. After this, we walked across a foot bridge overlooking the mountain. The bridge swayed as you walked across, which was terrifying and if you are afraid of heights, I definitely recommend you do not walk across this bridge. Once you cross the bridge you can wander around at the top or go back inside where you can have lunch, go to the gift shop or head back down to the bottom. There were one or two more activities you could do at the top of Mount Titlis, but we ran out of time and had to return to the bottom.
Would I go again?
I would love to go back and spend more time in Lucerne. We did not spend a lot of time there, but with the little time we did spend here, I know I would love to go back. On the day we went, the weather was gorgeous and the town was lovely to walk around. By the end of our short time in Lucerne, I still felt like there was so much left to see and explore. Titlis on the other hand, you only need the day to see the mountain. I definitely recommend going to see Mount Titlis if you go to a close enough area in Switzerland, but it is not a place I would stay at. I would enjoy going again because like I said earlier, since we were on a tour, we needed to return to the bottom by a certain time which did limit the amount of stuff we were able to do.
Highlights of Lucerne/Titlis: We were not in Lucerne long enough to get a highlight of the place, especially since the short time we were there I just wandered around, but I did really enjoy the walking around I did and the weather was sunny and beautiful. While I also did not spend a lot of time on Mount Titlis, my highlight there was the glacier cave. I really enjoyed that and even went through it more than once.
Fun fact about Titlis: One of the stops on the tram leads to a hotel.
